Home / Conservation / Dinosaurs are filmstars – Keep Looking Sharp

British Pathe has made available the short feature, “Palace Monsters” (1954), featuring Crystal Palace Dinosaurs. It features scenes of visitors as well as some regular cleaning.

One thing to notice is the heavy painting on the statues. Look at how thick the paint has been applied. This obscured the beautiful sculptural work of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.

A similar film, Crystal Palace Monsters, was made in 1950. This features some great scenes with the Megalosaurus. Shocking are the scenes of children climbing on (and in) the Iguanodons. That’s the kind of thing right now that puts the statues at risk. It’s an example of learning from history. We just shouldn’t do that anymore.
